Christian Malford is a small rural village in North Wiltshire; almost equidistant from four towns: Chippenham, Malmesbury, Calne and Royal Wootton Bassett. It sits at the centre of a large rural area surrounded by villages and a number of small hamlets. With a population of 782 (2021 Census); less than 60% are aged between 18 and 64 years of age:
Age. Population. Percentage
0 – 17 Years. 178. 21.6%
18 – 64 Years. 437. 55.6.%
Over 65 Years Old. 171. 21.8%
Its central location and facilities, in particular the village hall, village shop and post office, make it the focus, hub, for many activities in the area. It’s organisations and clubs draw membership from around the area and provide entertainment and support for the whole rural community - even drawing crowds out of the local towns. Support for our major annual events in the village, given the size of the village, is impressive, and is something for us to be justifiably proud of:
1. Malford Players put on 2 or 3 productions (3 night runs) a year play to packed houses.
2. Annual Scarecrow Trail – 2,500 visitors over the two day period.
3. Gig on the Rec (live music) – 1,500 visitors
4. Bonfire Night – 4,000 visitors
The size of the Village Hall, and its dated facilities, limits attendance; most events held in the Hall are well supported and frequently over-subscribed leading to disappointment. The Village Hall Committee strive to provide a suitable space to be enjoyed by the whole community, including those from around the local area, for entertainment and socialisation in a safe, warm and convivial environment.
Sadly the Village Hall has reached the end of its economic life and no longer meets the requirements, and aspirations, of our community today. The Village Hall is registered as a key asset in the community and its potential loss will have a significant impact on the life and well-being of our vibrant community.
Christian Malford certainly punches well above its weight for its size in our rural area – we certainly need, and deserve, a new Village Hall.
